Choose the seasonItaly continues beyond summer.
Start with what you want to do on your dates: a museum, a city evening, a confirmed event or a coast with workable connections. Then choose where to sleep.
November–March: cities and culture
Florence and Rome let you organise a stay around an indoor visit and the neighbourhood you choose. Check weekly and holiday closures before paying for a room; do not assume lower prices or empty streets.
Florence: museums and two nightsJanuary–February 2027: Carnival
Venice has announced Carnival for 23 January–9 February. Choose the confirmed experience and evening return first, then the island or Mestre. The programme is not identical every day.
Venice: island or MestreSpring and autumn: choose a base before excursions
For Puglia, Cinque Terre and Lake Como, check connections and openings for the actual dates. A connected base is more useful than a plan that depends on an unconfirmed seasonal boat, trail or bus.
Choose a base without a carSummer: coast, lakes and the Palio
Alghero and Olbia need different airports, ports and coastal journeys. Siena’s Palio falls on 2 July and 16 August: a summer reason to visit, while an overnight for museums and city time can serve a different trip during the rest of the year.
Siena: day trip or overnight 23 January–9 February 2027 · confirmed festival dates; individual performances, venues and admission conditions need their own official check.
November–March planning · museum visits work as indoor anchors; holiday openings, exhibition tickets and transport still need a date-specific check.
November–March planning · build around indoor culture and short outdoor stretches; this is not a confirmed Christmas or New Year event programme.
Year-round city decision · check museum openings and transport for your dates. The Palio on 2 July and 16 August belongs to summer, not a winter extension.
When to go: compare cities, coast and lakes
- Experience and dates. Confirm the opening or event with the official source; a broad season is not an admission ticket.
- Base and arrival. Check the journey to the door, evening returns and departure.
- Room and terms. Compare after those choices: total price, taxes, cancellation, heating and check-in.
Check the return train and which coastal services operate before adding a beach day to a town stay.
Choose an evening in the town or a countryside address, then check parking, heating and the last journey back.
Build a stay around the historic centre and a planned meal; arrange the return before choosing a rural room.
Use the cliff-town visit as the anchor; confirm boat departures and sea conditions separately for your dates.
Decide which towns share one base and whether you need a car before booking a countryside property.
Keep station-to-room access practical and confirm the current ferry timetable before planning several lake stops.
Check the bus or ferry connection that your arrival actually needs, plus the onward journey after checkout.
Choose the village around trains and luggage; check trail status and seasonal boats as separate decisions.
Choose a town stay or a coastal base, then verify airport arrival and the transport needed for each excursion.
Match the room to airport or port arrival; confirm seasonal coastal connections before relying on a beach bus.
